Archimedes Exhibit - One of History's Greatest Mathematician, Physicist, and Inventor

The Science of Archimedes invites guests to experience the ‘Eureka Effect’ while exploring how Archimedes' groundbreaking contributions to mathematics, physics, and engineering has shaped our modern world.

BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich., Nov. 8 , 2024 - Cranbrook Institute of Science today announced its newest traveling exhibit: The Science of Archimedes, giving patrons the opportunity to explore the life and discoveries of Archimedes of Syracuse (287-212 BCE), the Greek mathematician and physicist. This family-friendly exhibition runs through June 1, 2025. Regarded as one of the greatest scientists and mathematicians from the classical era, Archimedes' groundbreaking work comes to life in this exhibit through hands-on experiments. This exhibition features more than 100 items, including 60 models of historical artifacts and interactive reconstructions of
ancient technologies and machines, allowing visitors to gain insight into Archimedes’ discoveries on natural phenomena, the impact of technology on Hellenistic society and warfare and their relevance in today’s world.

"The Science of Archimedes offers a unique opportunity to dive into the mind of one of history’s greatest scientists, and we’re excited to provide this experience to families across Michigan," said Dr. Michael Stafford, Ph.D., Susan Flint Cooper Director of Cranbrook Institute of Science. “Guided by our mission to inspire STEAM exploration for all, this exhibit features various hands-on activities and interactive displays that help visitors of all ages gain a new appreciation for Archimedes' groundbreaking contributions to society – it’s a journey into the past that bridges historic innovations with the technology we depend on
today." Guests can explore Archimedes' key discoveries and contributions including:

-Archimedes Ballista: The heaviest version of this ancient catapult used to defend the City of Syracuse during the Roman Siege.
-The Claw of Archimedes: Also known as the Iron Hand, this ancient weapon overturned and rendered warships ineffective.
-Archimedes’ Heat Ray: A rumored system of mirrors harnessing the power of the sun to burst warships into flames.
-Archimedes Screw: An ancient hydraulic irrigation tool that is still influential in modern applications.
-Center of Mass: Archimedes' theory of the center of mass provided the foundation for Newton's Second Law of Motion.
-Buoyancy: Archimedes' work on buoyancy became a fundamental law of physics in fluid mechanics, giving him confidence that the Syracusia—a ship rumored to be so large it could hold a library, gymnasium and temple—would float.

Non-member tickets to Archimedes are $8 for adults, and $6 for children (ages 2-12) and seniors (65+). Tickets for Family or Companion Members are $7 for adults and $5 for children and seniors. Back Stage, All Access, and Galactic Members and children under two are free. Non-members must also pay general museum admission. Visitors can experience The Science of Archimedes during regular museum hours.
